RUTLAND – Hilary McCoy brings lots of skill to her job as a hair stylist, but for her it’s more about the people.

“It’s all about consultation,” she said, and that’s been key for the Rutland native who just moved back home. Over the years, McCoy said, “I listened, I knew my clients and I knew what they were looking for.”

After 16 years of building her career as a hair stylist in the Boston area, McCoy recently brought her talents back to her hometown of Rutland and is part of the team at Blush Salon & Beauty Lounge on Center Street.

It’s a people business, and that’s what she loves most about her work.

“I love interacting with different people every day,” McCoy said. “It’s a great way to meet and work with your community.”

She and her husband, John Paul, and their two children moved to Rutland in August: “I saw some people I haven’t seen in years.”

She started work at Blush Salon, owned by Paige Carrara, in early December. McCoy is based at the salon, but as an independent professional.

McCoy quickly noticed the positive energy around improving the downtown where she now works.

“It’s so cool to feel like such a part of everything,” she said.

The family angle was a big factor in the move: McCoy and her husband had made the choice to raise their family in Rutland.

Over her career, McCoy went from being an apprentice at Dellaria Salon in Brookline, Massachusetts, to lead stylist at G Spa, Gretta Monahan’s Newbury Street spa in Boston. Before her return to Vermont, she worked at Will Charles Salon on Newbury Street. She’s had extensive experience in hair coloring, cutting and styling and has been recognized by national publications like Allure magazine.

She has also traveled throughout the United States, training other hair stylists on the latest coloring techniques from Wella Professionals, a professional manufacturer of hair color and products.

As well as connecting with the individual customer, McCoy intends to share her expertise with the local community from an educational standpoint. She recently attended a chamber mixer and might do a segment on PEGTV.
